The exhibition ‘Júlio Pomar and Rui Chafes: Drawing’ invests in a specific notion about ‘drawing’ in bringing together the works of Júlio Pomar and Rui Chafes.
It features drawings by Júlio Pomar and two iron works/installations by Rui Chafes. Chafes will create a work specifically for this exhibition, while the other piece will be shown in Portugal for the first time. Made out of iron, the artist’s medium of choice, these two works take on the character of a drawing within the space of the Atelier-Museu.
As such, this exhibition has been conceived from the very beginning as a specific intervention in the Atelier-Museu’s space, where Júlio Pomar and Rui Chafes’ drawings scrutinise the qualities of the black outlines sketched in lines of charcoal and graphite or three dimensional iron lines.
Over the course of the exhibition, a catalogue will be published by Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar/ Documenta, featuring texts by João Barrento and Maria João Mayer Branco, and images of the works in the space.
‘Júlio Pomar and Rui Chafes: Drawing’ inaugurates a programme of exhibitions at the Atelier-Museu that aims to connect Júlio Pomar’s work with the work of other artists and establish linkages between the painter’s work and contemporaneity.
Each of these exhibitions will be accompanied by the publication of an in-depth interview with each of the invited artists. Through the voice of each artist, readers will be able to understand the motivations and bases inherent in their works, highlighting the importance of authorship in contemporary artistic production.
