To celebrate Júlio Pomar’s ninetieth birthday, the Escola Artística António Arroio came to the Atelier-Museu on 15 January to present the work produced by students based on the exhibition ‘Júlio Pomar and Rui Chafes: Drawing’.
Taking the drawings of the two artists, in both two- and three-dimensional form, as a starting point and exploring the link with and between the bodies which appear in both artists’ work, the students recreated adornments for their own bodies, especially the neck area, wearing them throughout the presentation.
Besides the references taken from the exhibition for the design of their piece, each student chose a concept to explore with which they identified, explaining briefly to the painter how they materialised their idea. Making use of diverse materials, from metal to cloth, paper to moulded plastic, the adornments used by each student were made entirely by the students themselves, with guidance from their teachers, and presented to the painter as a tableau vivant.
The work was carried out over a 3-month period, in cooperation with the Education Service at the Atelier-Museu, including a set of guided tours of the exhibition and several drawing sessions in front of the works of Júlio Pomar and Rui Chafes.
