17.03.2018 // 15.08.2018

The exhibition An Incision in Time was the result of an invitation from the Museu do Côa to the Atelier-Museu to display Júlio Pomar’s work at the former.

The invitation to exhibit the painter’s work at the Museu do Côa was based on the fact that Júlio Pomar’s work, particularly his prints, could be considered ‘a peer’ of the Vale do Côa engravings.

Following the invitation, the Atelier-Museu went to visit the museum site, which was designed by architects Pedro Tiago Pimentel and Camilo Rebelo.

Besides aspects related to rock art and its interpretation, the museum features...

May ’68 – 50 Years On’, curated by Nuno Crespo and Hugo Dinis, with works by Júlio Pomar, Ana Vidigal, Carla Filipe, João Louro, Jorge Queiroz, Ramiro Guerreiro and Tomás da Cunha Ferreira, evokes and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the French student movement. This revolutionary dynamic spread to various sectors of society and proved fundamental in defining contemporary life, albeit less in terms of the legislative and political changes which took place immediately and more due to the way in which the old, established social hierarchy, which was classist and...

As such, this exhibition was conceived from the very beginning as a specific intervention in the Atelier-Museu’s space, where Júlio Pomar and Julião Sarmento, through paintings and drawings scrutinise the concept of the ‘Void’, with the latter having been invited to design the exhibition’s graphic image.

‘Just decorative?’ Júlio Pomar and the integration of the arts’ was an exhibition commissioned by Catarina Rosendo and presents a previously unexplored facet of the artist’s work relating to the decorative arts, collaborations with industry and participation in architectural projects, aiming to explore the utilitarian dimension of art, distributing it throughout people’s everyday lives. As well as including a selection of Júlio Pomar’s best-known tapestries, prints and tiles, the exhibition particularly emphasises the period extending from the mid-1940s to the second half of the 1950s, when the artist pursued several ceramics and glass projects at the Fábrica Cerâmica Bombarrelense...

The title of the exhibition is drawn from a question which Júlio Pomar asked Helena Vaz da Silva during a conversation between the two in 1979.  For Maria do Mar Fazenda, despite the question mark, the title seeks an interlocutor rather than an answer.

Given that exhibitions may arise...

The ‘Inhabited World – Works from the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar’ exhibition was created following an invitation from Anadia Municipal Council to the Atelier-Museu to present Júlio Pomar’s work at the Museu do Vinho Bairrada.

Taking into account the context of this museum, which focuses on the history and winemaking activity of the region, it is necessary to clarify that no attempt was made to directly link the works chosen for the exhibition with the theme of Bacchus. The exhibition recognises that the painter’s work, with its diverse nuances, styles and figurations, celebrates existence, the pleasures of life, an inhabited...

The belief that many unhappy people could become happy through carefully targeted efforts prompted British mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), who was also a historian, social commentator and political activist, to write the book ‘The Conquest of Happiness’.  This theme is dear to Paulo Cunha e Silva, Councillor for Culture at Porto Municipal Council, who, as well as promoting the current exhibition at the Galeria da Biblioteca Municipal do Porto, proposed its title: ‘Happiness in Júlio Pomar’.

The exhibition is the result of a challenge issued by the Councillor to the Millennium bcp Foundation and the Atelier-Museu (acting...

The exhibition ‘Júlio Pomar and Rui Chafes: Drawing’ invests in a specific notion about ‘drawing’ in bringing together the works of Júlio Pomar and Rui Chafes.

It features drawings by Júlio Pomar and two iron works/installations by Rui Chafes. Chafes will create a work specifically for this exhibition, while the other piece will be shown in Portugal for the first time. Made out of iron, the artist’s medium of choice, these two works take on the character of a drawing within the space of the Atelier-Museu.

As such, this exhibition has been conceived from the very beginning as a...

What leads an artist to create editions and multiple copies of a single image? The exhibition ‘Edition and Utopia – The Graphic Work of Júlio Pomar’  raises a series of questions related to the practices of printmaking, screen printing and, lato sensu, ways of reproducing images. What drives the recourse to techniques that enable a multiplication of images? For what purpose?

The printmaking practices, the more or less special editions, and the more or less limited prints bear a kind of contradiction: the wide dissemination and circulation of an image of an artwork, whose singular, unrepeatable nature makes it...

Curated by Sara Antónia Matos in collaboration with the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar, the ‘Júlio Pomar – works from the Millennium bcp collection’ exhibition at the bank’s gallery brings together almost 40 works divided into three sections, featuring some of the most vigorous, exhilarating pictorial phases in the artist’s career.  For the exhibition, the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar lent Millennium bcp a set of unpublished studies, drawings and photographs which allow the execution of the final works on canvas and tapestry to be understood – a unique opportunity to understand the artist’s creative process.

A catalogue was produced for the occasion,...

The ‘Treatise on the eyes’ exhibition takes the form of a (self)portrait of the artist as a seer: a presentation of his personal way of seeing.

But how can this gaze be conveyed?  To reveal the painter’s perspective, we take a detour from his well-known artistic practice, and, in the centre of the exhibition, present a fundamental part of Júlio Pomar’s work which remains little known to many: the texts about art which he published from the 1940s. ‘The written part’’ is a profound, ongoing reflection on the artist’s craft and work in the atelier, a critical analysis of...

The Júlio Pomar Studio-Museum was opened on 5 April 2013. It soon became clear that the people flocking to it largely come from either the world of the visual arts or the world of architecture. Schools, lovers of architecture, and professionals working in the field have come to this cultural institution to see not only the painter’s work but also the building that houses it. The Atelier-Museu has received visitors who have come specifically to study the space, to analyse structural questions as well as the exterior outline of the façade and the patio at the rear, to examine...

As well as works belonging to the deposit, the inaugural exhibition includes other pieces loaned by prominent institutions and collections in which the artist is represented, which are considered fundamental in the artist’s career.

Viewing each painting as an integral part of his work as a whole, the exhibition criteria adopted for the first exhibition of the collection did not follow a chronological order in the positioning...
