October 2014 – March 2015

The fourth Education Service pack presents the activities carried out to accompany the exhibition Edition and Utopia – The Graphical Work of Júlio Pomar, which was held at the Atelier-Museu from October 2014 to March 2015.

Taking the techniques and themes that the artist explores in the works in this exhibition, the Education Service at the Atelier-Museu, which puts together an individual programme for each show, devised activities and workshops for children, young people and adults, based on gravure printing techniques and other forms of expression.

In addition to the workshops open to the general public, it put on activities aimed at specific groups, such as those who benefit from the charitable work of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de São Bento, young people from the Lar de Jovens Nuno Álvares Pereira de Almada, and others. These began with a guided tour of the Atelier-Museu, with subsequent sessions held at their own premises, where temporary facilities were set up for engraving with copper, zinc and recycled materials.

The Education Service of the Atelier-Museu also established partnerships with educational institutions, in particular primary schools, where they held a number of visual art activities aimed at making young children familiar with the artistic domain and encouraging them to have free, hands-on contact with art-related media.

On weekends, the public can also take part in a workshop consisting of two different studios: Lines and coloured surfaces, and Utopian marks. This workshop explores the exhibition Edition and Utopia – The Graphic Work of Júlio Pomar through different modes of expression: drawing, collage, frottage, painting, writing and various reproduction techniques for producing editions. The participants are invited to experiment with various methods such as engraving, sgraffito, imprinting, stamping, writing, and so on, and to make their mark on various materials, including clay, fabric, rubber, etc.

In line with its belief that a museum constitutes a series of works that go beyond the moment of their exhibition, the Education Service at the Atelier-Museu also organised a guided tour of the reserves of the National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA), where the participants had the opportunity to access restricted areas of the museum and gain an insight into the ancient art restoration department. A group from the Escola Artística António Arroio, for which the Atelier-Museu has put on a number of activities, was given a tour led by art historian Anísio Franco, curator and researcher at the MNAA.  This initiative was a unique opportunity to build bridges between institutions and visitors, and professionals and visitors, while giving students an insight into the artistic sphere and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of a museum of the stature of the MNAA. This was Júlio Pomar’s favourite museum; in his youth he would go there to study the great masters and look at works of art.

This pack includes an audio file with an excerpt from a conversation between the Education Service team and the painter himself, informing him of the outcome of the work carried out as a result of these activities.

Workshop 1: Lines and Coloured Surfaces
This workshop explores the exhibition ‘Edition and Utopia – The Graphic Work of Júlio Pomar’ through different modes of expression: drawing, collage, frottage, painting and writing.

The intention is to use these means to show that lines can give rise to coloured surfaces, with one morphing into the other, giving body to figures and places from stories.

As the editing process involves creating a framework for images or text and devising a way of presenting them, each participant is invited to choose a container – such as a cover, envelope, book, file or box – in which to keep the work that they have produced, depending on the paper format or the media that they have chosen.

Workshop 2: Utopian marks
Based on the graphic work of Júlio Pomar and the different reproduction methods that he used, the participants are invited to experiment with various techniques such as engraving, sgraffito, rubber-stamping, imprinting, stamping and writing, and to make their mark on materials as diverse as clay, cloth and rubber. As ‘editing’ also means creating a framework for images or text and devising a way of presenting them, each participant is invited to choose a container – such as a cover, envelope, book, file or box – in which to keep the work that they have produced.

Tour of the reserves of the MNAA

30 January 2015
AMJP in conjunction with the National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA)

Coordination: Teresa Santos
Guided tour: Anísio Franco and Elsa Gonçalves

Activity aimed at Year 10 pupils from the Escola Secundária Artística António Arroio.

The Education Service of the Júlio Pomar Studio Museum proposes a ‘Visit to the MNAA’s secret places’ to give pupils an insight into the backstage areas of the museum.

The objective of the tour is to see the St Vincent Panels, together with a look around the museum’s restricted areas – the parts off-limits to the public, in particular the spaces where restoration work is carried out and where sculptures are stored as they await restoration, before being transferred to the exhibition halls.

These areas, which have a unique and inspiring beauty that is evident from the pictures shown here, provide students with a secret, backstage view of the complex efforts involved in museum work, from conservation to the rehabilitation of works and their return to the exhibition spaces.

As such, this visit to the restricted areas of the MNAA is primarily a way of fostering encounters and sharing moments where the focus is on the act of seeing, in an understanding that this is the foremost and crucial impact of artistic education.
